What is your position at the West Central Research, Extension and Education Center?
I am a Postdoctoral Research Associate in the Department of Entomology at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln, working at WCREEC and living in North Platte, NE.
What drew you to the West Central Research, Extension and Education Center?
What motivated me to come to the center was the opportunity to conduct impactful entomological research, particularly in an environment that emphasizes integrated pest management and sustainable practices, which really aligned with my academic background and career goals. During my PhD, my former advisor encouraged me to apply for an internship abroad, and in 2022, I came to North Platte for the first time as a PhD sandwich student. I spent six months working in the Agroecosystems Entomology Lab under the supervision of Dr. Julie Peterson, where I also had the chance to improve my English. In March 2024, I had the opportunity to return and start my postdoc in the same lab.
What aspect of working in an educational setting do you enjoy the most?
What I enjoy most about working in an educational setting is the opportunity to interact with people of diverse nationalities and learn about different cultures. Additionally, being at the center increases the possibility of connecting with specialists from various fields, which contributes to my broader understanding of agriculture—not just entomology or pest management.
What do you consider your greatest achievement?
My greatest achievement is finishing my PhD and then having the opportunity to continue in academia as a postdoc at UNL.
What is something most people don’t know about you?
One aspect about me that is not widely known is my appreciation for animals, particularly cats, which I find comforting and stress-relieving. I have two cats—one I brought from Brazil (Toinho) and the other I adopted here in Nebraska (Luna).
What is your life like outside of work?
I spend my time going to the gym or taking walks around the lake at sunset. I often participate in gatherings and barbecues with other students living at the station. Reading is another activity that interests me during my free time outside of work.
