Peyton Fisher is preparing for her future career as a veterinarian with a beef internship at the UNL West Central Research, Extension and Education Center in North Platte, Nebraska.
As a Nebraska Elite 11 Veterinarian Program scholar, the internship with Dr. Rick Funston and his team has provided her with a unique opportunity and a new perspective of the beef industry.
Working under Dr. Rick Funston, a reproductive specialist, Fisher has learned how to pregnancy-check, monitor heat cycles, and draw blood samples, giving her an experience beyond the traditional veterinarian perspective.
Fisher’s academic drive and dedication to the agriculture industry helped her earn a spot in the Nebraska Elite 11 Veterinarian Program.
This program is designed to attract and retain future food-animal veterinarians by alleviating the financial burden of education. In return, students commit to practicing in Nebraska as a production-animal veterinarian for 8 years to serve Nebraska’s agricultural sector.
Outside of her studies, Fisher is on the UNL College Rodeo Team, competing in barrels and breakaway. Beyond this commitment, she stays focused on her academics to earn her spot on the Dean’s List. Fisher’s favorite spot at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln is East Campus, because of its small-town atmosphere, which will offer a natural transition back to rural Nebraska where she plans to serve local farmers and ranchers.
The West Central Research, Extension and Education Center is proud to support Fisher as she prepares for her future career as a veterinarian in the state of Nebraska.
