The
Glenn Viehmeyer Arboretum at the University of Nebraska West Central Research
and Extension Center, located two miles south of North Platte, is a research
and educational arboretum emphasizing breeding, selection and evaluation
of trees, shrubs, herbaceous plants and grasses.
It is a member site of the
Nebraska Statewide Arboretum (NSA), which seeks to promote knowledge,
appreciation and use of Nebraska plants through the establishment of
arboreta on selected sites.
Approximately 5,000 trees
and shrubs representing more than 100 species are growing at the site.
Juniper, pine and hackberry comprise the majority of the total number
of trees, with particular note of the large Siberian elms, bur oaks
and cottonwoods. The Tree Lane consists of two rows of hackberry
trees lining the road west of the Centers main grounds.
The arboretum is named for
the late Glenn Viehmeyer, a horticulturist at the West Central Research
and Extension Center from 1943 to 1966
The Arboretum is open from
dawn to dusk and visitors are invited to walk or drive through the grounds.
Many of the plants in the arboretum collection are labeled.
