Cattleman’s Days scheduled in four locations
Extension educators have planned Cattleman’s Day and Trade Show events for Mon., Nov. 16, 2009, in North Platte at the Lincoln County Fairgrounds; Tues., Nov. 17, 2009, Ogallala, Grey Goose; Mon., Nov. 23, 2009 in McCook, Red Willow County Fairgrounds; and Tues., Nov. 24, 2009, in Imperial, Zion Lutheran Church, said University of Nebraska–Lincoln Extension Educator Randy Saner of North Platte.
Each session will start with registration at 8:30 a.m. local, Saner said. Pre-registration deadline is one week before each session.
After a nine o’clock keynote on “The Future of Food Safety: How it Affects Cattle Producers” with Drew Gaffney,Nebraska Cattlemen's Association Beef Quality Assurance coordinator, attendees will select from two topics during two rotations.
Rotation One:
- “Calving Date Economics” - Brian Strauch, Extension Educator, Red Willow County
- “Livestock Gross Margin and Livestock Risk Protection” – Robert Tigner, Extension Educator, Chase, Dundy, Hayes and Hitchcock counties
Rotation Two:
- “McCOOL and Source and Age Verification Programs” – Noel Mues, Extension Educator, Furnas County
- “How Size Affects Heifer Development” – Randy Saner, Extension Educator, Lincoln and McPherson counties
Luncheon speaker, Matt Spangler, Extension Beef Genetics Specialist, will discuss “Utilizing Genomic Information in Selection.”
After lunch, two more rotations will provide participants with more choices.
Rotation Three:
- “The Value of Cornstalks Versus Range” – Aaron Stalker, Extension Beef Range Systems Specialist
- “Ranch Profitability: What Are the Choices? – Doug Anderson, Extension Educator, Keith and Perkins counties
Rotation Four:
- “Windrow Grazing” – Jerry Volesky, Extension Forage and Range Management Specialist
- “Benefits of and Tips to Achieve a Short Calving Season” – Rick Funston, Extension Beef Reproductive Physiologist
Breaks throughout the day will allow for visits to the trade show, Saner said. Door prizes will end each of the session between 3:30 and 5 p.m. local time.
